Safety Tips HDIS: Bathroom Safety

HDIS holds the philosophy of “people first, safety always” to a very high degree, so much so that we asked experts from our Care team what tips they would give customers to stay safe in various areas of their homes. Previously, our experts provided top-notch tips on how to stay ahead of bedroom safety; for this blog we will explore what they had to say about how to best avoid falls and injuries in the bathroom.

“Bathroom safety is very important- over 230,000 people injure themselves in bathroom related incidents each year! I like to tell customers that call in asking for bathroom safety tips to start with the basics: install non-slip surfaces where possible. One of my regular recommendations is to order the Rubber Bath Mat; the mat has a suction grip that allows it to be securely attached to a tub’s surface for fall prevention. We also offer the Deluxe Bath Mat with Scrubbers, the product acts in the same way as the rubber mat but also include two foot scrubbers and a pumice stone for additional foot care. “

“Often our customers tell us that their bathrooms can start to feel cramped with the addition of health aids and accessories. The best tip I can give is to stay organized and remove any excess clutter in the bathroom, when possible. This minimizes the risk of tripping over random equipment or belongings.”

“One of the most obvious pieces of advice I can give for customers looking to tighten up their bathroom safety is to install grab bars in their bathroom. These bars can be installed in areas that require a little extra care while moving around (i.e. near the tub or the toilet). Our website has a couple of grab bar options available, and I frequently recommend the Bath Balance Assist Bar. I feel that it truly does provide the sturdy support needed for getting in and out of the tub- a place that is quite often the culprit when it comes to bathroom injuries.”

“Many of the customers I talk to tell me that they are unable to stand for long periods of time, and because of that the idea of standing to take a shower can give them added anxiety. For these people I suggest that they buy a shower bench, much like the Carex Universal Bath Bench that is available by phone or on the website.”

Stop and Smell the Roses: The Importance of Mindfulness

Being mindful is defined as taking the time for what is important to one’s self and focusing on being in the present. Often we find ourselves worrying about what’s next: next appointment, next commitment, and so on. This worry can take away from the present and enjoying the time at hand. Studies show that taking time to “stop and smell the roses” can increase overall quality of life, here are some tricks the experts at HDIS suggest we utilize to stay present and mindful:

Meditate Daily

Daily meditation can help keep your mindset present and can even slow your awareness of passing time. Meditation can take many forms: the easiest method is to find a quiet place in your home, find your favorite seated position and then begin to shift your focus to your breathing and how your body moves with your breathing. The goal of meditation is to go beyond the awareness of time and to focus on the present.

Stress Less

Being stressed is often a detriment to our physical and mental health. Studies have shown that when we are distracted by events, obstacles and our growing to-do lists we have the feeling that time is passing by more quickly. By taking the time to prioritize our time and energy, we alleviate what scientists have identified as “time pressure” and focus more positively on meeting our goals.

Recommended Products:

For optimum results, fill with warm water. Foot bath will retain heat for approximately 20 minutes while the bubble feature is enabled.

Don’t Be Afraid to Try Something New

As we age we get comfortable with our daily routines,we sometimes forget how exciting it can be to try something new.  By trying a new recipe, planning a trip to a new place, or even starting the journey of learning a new skill, we shake up our dependence on routines and begin to be more present while enjoying new experiences.

Expert Tips on How to Avoid the Flu this Season with HDIS

Flu season is projected to run this year from mid-November 2018 to March 2019. We are currently in peak season for getting sick. The CDC has reported that roughly 9 million people each year will come down with the flu, even if the appropriate measures are proactively taken to avoid the virus. We talked to our highly trained staff here at HDIS compiled the best tips to avoid getting sick:

Get vaccinated!

Making an appointment with your doctor or local pharmacy to get your flu shot will decrease your chances greatly of catching the virus. Not a fan of shots? You’re in luck! Most healthcare providers also provide a flu “mist” which is a nasal spray flu vaccine option for those that prefer to avoid the traditional standard dose flu shot.

Wash your hands

Washing your hands regularly throughout the day (and using anti-bacterial hand gel when washing isn’t an option) can help stop the spread of germs in communal spaces. The standard practice of using soap and water works well when available, but it may also be a good idea to use hand gels like the Purell Foam Hand Sanitizer or the Purell Hand Sanitizer with Aloe (both can be found directly on the HDIS website).

Keep your Space Clean

Another great tip for avoiding the flu is keeping your personal space clean and germ free. Cleaning spaces like desks, keyboards, chairs, tables and door knobs routinely can eliminate most viruses and bacteria that may linger on surfaces. HDIS carries a variety of aids to daily living that can help fight germs and keep your space clean. One of the top suggested products is Purell Hand Sanitizing Wipes (Fragrance Free) to keep your spaces and surfaces germ free.

Unfortunately, even with the most stringent preventative actions the flu can strike leaving you feeling under the weather. Luckily, our experts have also suggested the following tips and products to get you back to feeling 100%:

Get Plenty of Rest and Stay Hydrated

Taking time to let your body fight the virus is imperative to getting healthy quickly. Staying at home and resting gives your body a chance to create flu fighting antibodies and decreases the possibility of spreading the virus to other people. Staying hydrated is also important as it helps clear out the germs that are remaining.

Run the Humidifier

Dry air in your home or room can make congestion and coughing worse! By running a humidifier you help increase moisture in the air to ease your respiratory flu symptoms. Try an Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier that can be found on HDIS.com!

Visit Your Doctor

If flu symptoms are particularly bad, go see your doctor and ask about getting medicine to alleviate symptoms. Most bouts of the flu will run its course in a few days, but always consult your doctor if things start to worsen after taking restorative action from the onset of your flu symptoms.
