Safety Tips HDIS: Bathroom Safety

HDIS holds the philosophy of “people first, safety always” to a very high degree, so much so that we asked experts from our Care team what tips they would give customers to stay safe in various areas of their homes. Previously, our experts provided top-notch tips on how to stay ahead of bedroom safety; for this blog we will explore what they had to say about how to best avoid falls and injuries in the bathroom.

“Bathroom safety is very important- over 230,000 people injure themselves in bathroom related incidents each year! I like to tell customers that call in asking for bathroom safety tips to start with the basics: install non-slip surfaces where possible. One of my regular recommendations is to order the Rubber Bath Mat; the mat has a suction grip that allows it to be securely attached to a tub’s surface for fall prevention. We also offer the Deluxe Bath Mat with Scrubbers, the product acts in the same way as the rubber mat but also include two foot scrubbers and a pumice stone for additional foot care. “

“Often our customers tell us that their bathrooms can start to feel cramped with the addition of health aids and accessories. The best tip I can give is to stay organized and remove any excess clutter in the bathroom, when possible. This minimizes the risk of tripping over random equipment or belongings.”

“One of the most obvious pieces of advice I can give for customers looking to tighten up their bathroom safety is to install grab bars in their bathroom. These bars can be installed in areas that require a little extra care while moving around (i.e. near the tub or the toilet). Our website has a couple of grab bar options available, and I frequently recommend the Bath Balance Assist Bar. I feel that it truly does provide the sturdy support needed for getting in and out of the tub- a place that is quite often the culprit when it comes to bathroom injuries.”

“Many of the customers I talk to tell me that they are unable to stand for long periods of time, and because of that the idea of standing to take a shower can give them added anxiety. For these people I suggest that they buy a shower bench, much like the Carex Universal Bath Bench that is available by phone or on the website.”

Safety should be a priority in every home, and HDIS carries a wide variety of aids to daily living that can help prevent against accidents in every room of the house. Want to learn more? Stop and Smell the Roses: The Importance of Mindfulness

Being mindful is defined as taking the time for what is important to one’s self and focusing on being in the present. Often we find ourselves worrying about what’s next: next appointment, next commitment, and so on. This worry can take away from the present and enjoying the time at hand. Studies show that taking time to “stop and smell the roses” can increase overall quality of life, here are some tricks the experts at HDIS suggest we utilize to stay present and mindful:

Meditate Daily

Daily meditation can help keep your mindset present and can even slow your awareness of passing time. Meditation can take many forms: the easiest method is to find a quiet place in your home, find your favorite seated position and then begin to shift your focus to your breathing and how your body moves with your breathing. The goal of meditation is to go beyond the awareness of time and to focus on the present.

Recommended Product:

Conair Massaging Neck Rest- Wrapped in soft, durable fabric, the adjustable arms with four positions ensure a perfect cradle for an aching neck. Convenient and easy-to-use controls allow heat therapy to fuse with variable speed vibration for optimized comfort.

Stress Less

Being stressed is often a detriment to our physical and mental health. Studies have shown that when we are distracted by events, obstacles and our growing to-do lists we have the feeling that time is passing by more quickly. By taking the time to prioritize our time and energy, we alleviate what scientists have identified as “time pressure” and focus more positively on meeting our goals.

Recommended Products:

Hyland’s Calm Quick-Dissolving Tablets- this product eases the symptoms of stress with a non-habit forming and non-drowsy formula that provides natural relief of anxiousness to help restore a sense of tranquility and settle your mind.

Conair Deluxe Waterfall Foot Spa- Slip your tired, achy feet into the soothing comfort of this exceptional foot bath; feel all the tension from the day melt away as you relax amid the massaging bubbles. For optimum results, fill with warm water. Foot bath will retain heat for approximately 20 minutes while the bubble feature is enabled.

Don’t Be Afraid to Try Something New

As we age we get comfortable with our daily routines,we sometimes forget how exciting it can be to try something new.  By trying a new recipe, planning a trip to a new place, or even starting the journey of learning a new skill, we shake up our dependence on routines and begin to be more present while enjoying new experiences.

Recommended Product:

Veggetti Pro- The Veggetti Pro's ultra-sharp interchangeable stainless steel cutting blades effortlessly slice through vegetables for endless pasta strips. Now you can make delicious healthy pasta, salads, coleslaw, onion rings and so much more, fast and easy!

Expert Tips on How to Avoid the Flu this Season with HDIS

Flu season is projected to run this year from mid-November 2018 to March 2019. We are currently in peak season for getting sick. The CDC has reported that roughly 9 million people each year will come down with the flu, even if the appropriate measures are proactively taken to avoid the virus. We talked to our highly trained staff here at HDIS compiled the best tips to avoid getting sick:

Get vaccinated!

Making an appointment with your doctor or local pharmacy to get your flu shot will decrease your chances greatly of catching the virus. Not a fan of shots? You’re in luck! Most healthcare providers also provide a flu “mist” which is a nasal spray flu vaccine option for those that prefer to avoid the traditional standard dose flu shot.

Wash your hands

Washing your hands regularly throughout the day (and using anti-bacterial hand gel when washing isn’t an option) can help stop the spread of germs in communal spaces. The standard practice of using soap and water works well when available, but it may also be a good idea to use hand gels like the Purell Foam Hand Sanitizer or the Purell Hand Sanitizer with Aloe (both can be found directly on the HDIS website).

Keep your Space Clean

Another great tip for avoiding the flu is keeping your personal space clean and germ free. Cleaning spaces like desks, keyboards, chairs, tables and door knobs routinely can eliminate most viruses and bacteria that may linger on surfaces. HDIS carries a variety of aids to daily living that can help fight germs and keep your space clean. One of the top suggested products is Purell Hand Sanitizing Wipes (Fragrance Free) to keep your spaces and surfaces germ free.

Unfortunately, even with the most stringent preventative actions the flu can strike leaving you feeling under the weather. Luckily, our experts have also suggested the following tips and products to get you back to feeling 100%:

Get Plenty of Rest and Stay Hydrated

Taking time to let your body fight the virus is imperative to getting healthy quickly. Staying at home and resting gives your body a chance to create flu fighting antibodies and decreases the possibility of spreading the virus to other people. Staying hydrated is also important as it helps clear out the germs that are remaining.

Run the Humidifier

Dry air in your home or room can make congestion and coughing worse! By running a humidifier you help increase moisture in the air to ease your respiratory flu symptoms. Try an Ultrasonic Cool Mist Humidifier that can be found on HDIS.com!

Visit Your Doctor

If flu symptoms are particularly bad, go see your doctor and ask about getting medicine to alleviate symptoms. Most bouts of the flu will run its course in a few days, but always consult your doctor if things start to worsen after taking restorative action from the onset of your flu symptoms.

Tips for a Better Night's Sleep

Most people do not feel that they have rested well, or enough, when it’s time to rise in the morning. The good news is there are things we can do to improve our sleep. Getting a good night’s rest can affect one’s mental and physical health, and overall quality of the day ahead.  While we don’t all need the exact same amount of sleep, a study by the National Sleep Foundation Scientific Advisory Council provides recommended sleep amounts by age.

In this email, we review your basic sleep news and highlight a few things that YOU can do to help achieve good rest every night.

Newborns (0-3 months)
: 14-17 hours each day
Infants ( 4-11 months)
: 12-15 hours each day
Toddlers (1-2 years)
: 11-14 hours
Preschoolers (3-5):
10-13 hours
School age children (6-13)
: 9-11 hours
Teenagers (14-17)
: 8-10 hours
Younger adults (18-25)
: 7-9 hours
Adults (26-64)
: 7-9 hours
Older adults (65+)
: 7-8 hours

In addition to the sleep need ranges above, many other factors can play a part in your sleep needs and the quality of sleep you achieve. The first step is to "prepare for sleep." Beyond our “getting ready for bed routine,” think about your surroundings and bedtime rituals. Studies have shown that these 3 tips below may help improve your quality of sleep.

1) Get the Right Lighting
Soft white lighting is good for shutting down our brain. Dim the lights or just have one or two lamps lit within an hour of bedtime. Around this time also shut off electronics, including the TV! Electronic screens, such as the TV, tablets, phones and computers emit a blue light that restricts our production of Melatonin. Melatonin is a chemical that human bodies produce to control our sleeping and waking cycles.  So, be sure to "unplug" at night.

2) Find a Comfortable Temperature
When falling asleep, your body temperature lowers. For adults, lowering the temperature of your bedroom to 60-67 degrees can help that happen more quickly. Infants and young children do better with a temperature of 65-70 degrees. The best environment for sleeping is a place that is cool, dark and quiet.

3) Mind Your Bedtime Food and Drink
What you eat and drink late in the day can have a huge impact on the quality of sleep you achieve. Good evening snacks include whole grain crackers, nuts (including walnuts, almonds and cashews).  Avoid caffeinated drinks in the evening and try not to each too close to bedtime.

Bonus Tip!
Use an appropriate absorbent product to stay dry and comfortable through the night!  SHOP NOW!

Booster Pads vs. Regular Pads

Booster pads and regular pads are two entirely different products.  Many customers are unaware of the unique differences, so we would like to provide you with more information about each product.  Some customers need one of these products, but the majority of our customers benefit from both. A regular pad has a waterproof backing on it that does not allow liquid to flow through it, while a booster pad has no such backing. Wearing a booster pad inside of your regular underwear without another layer of protection would certainly result in leakage. However, if you are already wearing protective underwear, a booster pad offers an added layer of protection.

 Booster Pads:
A booster pad is an absorbent pad designed to be used inside of your protective underwear.   It provides an extra layer of protection. If you are using a large quantity of protective underwear (pull-ups) on a daily basis, a booster pad could help to minimize the number you use every day, and ultimately, save you money! Booster pads are worn inside of your protective underwear so your protective underwear will last longer. When you wear a booster bad inside of your protective underwear, you have at least an extra 18 ounces of absorbency. When the booster pad becomes soiled, you can remove it quickly and replace it. Instead of changing your protective underwear, you would only change your booster pad.   HDIS offers several types of booster pads to fit your needs.  When leaving your home for an errand, outing, or doctor’s appointment, most of our customers prefer taking an extra booster pad with them to allow a quick change in any restroom.

Regular Pads:
A regular pad serves a different purpose.  While a booster pad may only come in two to three absorbency levels, a regular pad is offered in light absorbency to ultimate absorbency.   A regular pad is intended to be worn inside of your regular under wear. The majority of major brands produce a line of regular pads, while only a handful of brands provide booster pads.  There are so many configurations to consider including the shape, length, and scent, that it can become overwhelming to find the right fit.

Next Steps:
Let HDIS help determine what products will work best for you! With just a few questions, we can help you find your perfect fit! Give us a call today to get started at 1-800-269-4663, or shop now at HDIS.com.

Vacationing with Incontinence

Guest Blogger: Damon W., Customer Care Representative, HDIS

The holidays are around the corner! If you are planning to take a vacation over the holidays, be sure to pack and plan carefully.

Let’s chat about traveling with incontinence to avoid any issues that may arise. It is important to note that you can still have an amazing vacation while being incontinent.  HDIS is more than ready to equip you with what you need, so incontinence doesn’t hinder your enjoyment.

There are several options available to you. We understand you may have questions leading to your travels. First, you might want to order an extra couple of packages, to ensure you have MORE than enough to get you through the duration of your stay. If you use our convenient PDP (Personalized Delivery Plan), you should check the date of your next delivery to make sure you will be home to receive it. If the next delivery date falls on a day when you will be on vacation, you can always put a hold on the shipment or reschedule it. We are able to alter your delivery dates to accommodate your lifestyle. Just give us a call and we will discuss the best delivery path for you.

HDIS also provides products for activities such as swimming. Yes! You can enjoy swimming while incontinent. Tranquility offers a product called Swim Mates. The Swim Mates line provides incontinence protection prior to entering the pool. It also provides containment for bowel incontinence. The pull-up style underwear does not break apart and only shows minimal swelling from the water. They are designed to be worn under a bathing suit. The benefits swim mates provide have helped our customers tremendously.

There are other products you should consider as well. Pads and protective underwear (pull-up style) are only the beginning. Other products that are beneficial for traveling include:

·        Pill organizers securely hold pills and help maintain a morning and evening medication schedule while away from the house.

·        A Memory foam half roll pillow provides pressure relief on the legs, neck and back.

·       The Miracle All Day Moisturizer provides all day dry skin relief.  This product also meets the 3oz. liquid limit for air travel.

·       Comfort Bath Washcloths will aid in a refreshing quick cleanup on a long flight.

A good rule of thumb for traveling with incontinence is to over stock your products. I recommend packing twice the amount of pads/pull ups you need, especially in warmer climates, where you will consume more liquids to combat the heat. We can hold your delivery until you return, or deliver it right before you leave. We are even able to ship it to your holiday destinations. HDIS is more than willing to help equip you for an amazing vacation.

Our Customer Care Representatives will make sure you can travel with confidence.  Visit our website at hdis.com or give us a call today at 1-800-269-4663. We can’t wait to hear about your plans!

Managing Your Incontinence

Living with incontinence is manageable… as long as it’s managed correctly. People who live with incontinence can monitor and control their condition with a variety of incontinence products, as well as counseling from the expert Customer Care Representatives at HDIS. HDIS prides itself on being a great resource for those looking to go about their “normal” life and also still do the things that they’ve always wanted to do. In fact, many people managing their incontinence still plan for their regularly scheduled visits to the doctor’s office, book their travel to their much anticipated family gatherings and family vacations, and also continue to support their grandchildren at sports games, school events, etc.

Planning for these events is easy once you get into the habit of thinking about how to stay prepared for any situation! When going to a doctor’s visit, family gathering, or grandchild’s sports game, it is important to pack an extra change of clothing. Additionally, making sure you have enough incontinence products with you at any given time is also a great way to be prepared for any unfortunate incontinence situation that could occur while you’re away from home. By taking these extra planning measures, you will have the peace of mind knowing that you are prepared for any situation. This thoughtful planning will help you avoid any potential embarrassment that could occur while you’re out in public. The peace of mind you get from being prepared can allow you the ability to enjoy your time away from home; whether it be at a doctor’s appointment, family event, or simply a grocery store visit.

One of the best ways to avoid leakage in public is to utilize more than one incontinence product at a time. Wearing a booster pad in addition to pads, underwear, briefs, etc. will provide additional security. If you’re a person that wears protective underwear, bringing along extra booster pads is always a great idea! You can place the booster pads inside of the protective underwear, which gives you an extra boost of absorbency with your protective underwear. Booster pads save you from having to change your protective underwear so frequently. If you are at an appointment or at a grandchild’s baseball game, you won’t have to miss a moment worrying about your products effectiveness.

The Customer Care Representatives at HDIS are ready to help you with all of your incontinence needs, and have proven solutions for all of your concerns. Give us a call today: 1-800-269-4663.

Kick-off Clean Eating with these Helpful Meal Hints!

In today’s world there is a huge push to improve general quality of life by not only exercising but also by eating clean. Clean eating can help with weight loss, maintaining clearer skin, improved mood and higher energy levels; all results that are beneficial at any age!

To attain results similar to those listed above, the concept of clean eating has been broken down into the following six steps:

1.       Cook More- Seems simple, right? By cooking more you have the ability to control what exactly goes into your food, and how it is prepared. These factors are important in staying on top of tracking your diet and sticking to a diet plan.

2.       Keep the Balance- Although at times it may seem like a good idea to eat a heaping helping of pasta for dinner, a balanced meal will help maintain your health and clean eating plan overall. Try to balance food groups according to doctor recommended health standards; meaning try to choose 5-6 ounces of lean meat per meal, and also try to make half of your meal plate full of healthy fruits and veggies. Preparing meals with a balance in mind will also be key in establishing healthy eating habits down the line.

3.       Read the Ingredients! – Many of us ignore this crucial step at the grocery store and subsequently lose out on items that could be more in line with health goals. At the store, be sure to look for ingredient lists that are relatively short and easily recognizable. A good rule of thumb is to search and buy products that have 10 ingredients or less.

4.       Know Where It’s Grown- Take note of where the food you’re looking at comes from. If possible try to purchase products that are locally sourced; a good solution is to shop at farmer’s markets when possible.

5.       Don’t Forget to Hydrate- According to the CDC roughly 43% of adults drink less than 4 cups of water a day; that’s close to 50% less than the recommended amount! When possible try to avoid beverages that are high in sugar, caffeine and artificial sweeteners as they could cause dehydration and other detrimental health problems. A good way to add a little flavor to your water is to add in fruit, herbs or even veggies to keep things interesting!

6.       Make Mealtime an Event- By taking time to sit down and truly enjoy the meal, you are able to avoid the temptations of fast food or other quick meal options that may be full of artificial preservatives. To really enjoy a “clean” meal, try to invite friends or family over to appreciate all of the hard work into making the meal come to life!

While most people spend November and December prepping for and attending holiday gatherings, often we forget about our seniors that find themselves home alone. Safety Tips from HDIS: Bedroom Safety

HDIS values safety to the highest degree; so much so that we have adopted the philosophy of “people first, safety always.” This means that we keep safety in mind at every level of the business: from purchasing the safest products for our customers, following strict safety policies in our shipping facilities, and especially when we council our valued customers on what measures they can take to keep themselves safe in their very own homes! We asked our experts on our Customer Care Team what tips they thought were most important regarding tightening up bedroom and this is what they had to say:

“Often we hear that getting in and out of bed is hard for adults that are experiencing problems with mobility. If a customer calls in and mentions that this is something they have been dealing with, I like to recommend that they purchase a bedrail to provide more stability and support.”

“Whenever I speak to a customer about bedroom safety, I always ask if they have had their flooring or carpet inspected recently. Tripping hazards can be a real danger to everyone moving around the bedroom, and keeping tripping hazards to a minimum should be a priority for all.”

“Many of our customers rely on walkers to safely navigate the rooms in their house. We like to remind those that do to keep the paths in their bedrooms clear of clutter and to store their walker next to their bed at night for easy access.  Keeping the walkers nearby and the pathways clear make for easy travel from the bedroom to other areas in the house!”

“If a customer calls in and brings up frequent urination at night, I not only recommend overnight products to minimize the amount of trips to and from the bathroom but I also recommend a bedside commode or urinal to decrease their chances of incurring a fall while traveling to the bathroom. If the customer is more mobile, and doesn’t rely on help getting around the house, I will highly recommend putting extra light in the bedroom that can be used when getting out of bed and to the bathroom.”

Safety should be a priority in every home, and HDIS carries a wide variety of aids to daily living that can help prevent against accidents in every room of the house. Want to learn more? Once you have identified a product that works for you, it would be beneficial to set up a PDP.  If you know that one case of 72 protective underwear lasts you for 6 weeks, our suggestion will be to place you on a 6 week schedule.  You will receive a 5% discount on the case, and a one-time $8.00 coupon applied to the first order.  You no longer have to call to order, and your case of products will arrive at your doorstep in a discreet box once every 6 weeks!

If you are unsure of the type of schedule you need, just let us know.  We will determine based on your order history, which schedule would fit you best.

Still unsure? We can give you a call to inform you that your order is shipping soon.   At this time you can delay, confirm or make changes.   Like many of our customers, you may have more than one product that you order regularly. We can place multiple items on your Personalized Delivery Plan.  Your products can even be on different schedules.  If you need your skin cream every 8 weeks, and your protective underwear (pull-up style) every 6 weeks, we can schedule your products to arrive at different times.   No difficulty.  The scheduling for your PERSONALIZED DELIVERY PLAN will always be tailor-made for you.

The 5% discount is applied automatically to eligible products and quantities.  You won’t have to call to receive the discount, because your products are instantly priced to reflect the plan.  As long as you have the plan, you have the discount.   It really is that simple.   Your one-time $8.00 coupon works much the same way.  On your very first order when you sign up, the coupon is instantly applied to that order.   All of these benefits are at no cost to you.  You have the ability to make whatever changes are needed to suit you.  There is no obligation to remain in the plan, but we always encourage the plan for its savings and convenience.   You can spend more time enjoying the things you love to do, without having to remember to call us before you run out of products.

Our friendly Customer Care Representatives are always happy to assist you!  We are ready to start the conversation about the best product for you, and how often you’ll need it.  Give us a call today at 1-800-269-4663. We can’t wait to hear from you!
